WHAT TO EXPECT

A pelvic floor PT appointment, especially your first, can feel intimidating. The visit begins with a detailed discussion of your medical history, symptoms, and goals. Expect questions about past pregnancies, menstrual cycles, bladder/bowel habits, pain levels (at rest and with activity, including sexual activity), previous injuries, and activity levels. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing, as the physical exam may involve movement and muscle testing, including mobility and muscle strength assessments. There may also be an internal exam, but only with your consent.
HOW INTERNAL EXAMS WORK
Internal exams can often cause the most anxiety before a pelvic floor PT visit, so here is a step-by-step breakdown of what to expect. If an internal exam is agreed upon, the process typically involves the following:

1. The PT will explain each step in detail to ensure there are no surprises.
2. Pelvic floor muscle testing is performed using one gloved and lubricated finger.
3. PT will palpate the pelvic floor muscles both internally and externally to check for tension points.
4. Pelvic floor coordination will be assessed through guided exercises such as Kegels, bearing down, deep core contraction, and diaphragmatic breathing.

Your PT will explain every step to ensure you're comfortable, obtain ongoing consent, and the exam will help guide the diagnosis. After the assessment, the PT will develop a personalized treatment plan, including exercises to do at home, and set follow-up visits. Open communication is encouraged, so ask questions and share any concerns. Your PT's goal is to create a safe, supportive environment and help you feel empowered throughout the process.
